Non-alcoholic Spirits Were the Star of Dry January

Published on January 30th, 2023.

For the second year in a row, people embraced Dry January without simply sitting at home drinking a giant jug of water. According to data from Drizly, the alcohol delivery platform, there was a 56% increase in purchases across non-alcoholic booze categories in 2023 compared to 2022. It was a 129% increase from 2021, which proves that people are truly embracing booze-free beer, wine and spirits more than ever before.

Out of spirits, wine and beer, non-alcoholic spirits experienced the largest growth from years past. They had a 129% increase in purchases compared to 2022 and a whopping 433% increase from 2021. On Drizly’s platform specifically, CleanCo, Lyre’s, Spiritless, Owen’s and Ritual Zero were the fastest-growing non-alcoholic spirits.

Booze-free wine also had a significant jump from 2022 to 2023. It experienced a 70% increase, which was 200% higher than 2021. The fastest-growing non-alcoholic wine brands on Drizly include Wölffer Estate, Leitz, Tost, Dr. Fischer and Martinelli’s.

Although non-alcoholic beer was the slowest growing category on Drizly, it still saw jumps from previous years. The category grew 26% from 2022, and jumped 81% from January 2021. According to Drizly, Untitled Art, Rescue Club Brewing, Stella Artois, Flying Dog and Busty Lush were its fastest-growing non-alc beers.

The most difficult aspect of something like Dry January is going out and abstaining while everyone else enjoys their libation of choice. But the significant growth in the non-alcoholic spirits category shows that people are embracing less alcohol with beverages that taste better than plain old seltzer with lemon.
